Two novel treatments to reduce overeating in overweight children: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Our purpose in this study was to examine 2 treatments targeted at reducing eating in the absence of hunger in overweight and obese children. Method: Thirty-six overweight and obese 8- to 12-year-old children (58% female; mean age = 10.3 years, SD = 1.3), with high scores on eating in the absence of hunger, and their parents were randomly assigned to an 8-week children’s appetite awareness training or cue exposure treatment–food. Children completed an eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) paradigm, an Eating Disorder Examination interview for children, and three 24-hr dietary recalls, and their height and weight were measured. Parents completed the EAH Questionnaire and the Binge Eating Scale, and their height and weight were measured. Assessments were conducted at baseline, posttreatment, and 6 and 12 months posttreatment. Results: Results showed that both treatments resulted in significant decreases in binge eating in children over time. Additionally, children in the food cue exposure treatment showed significant decreases in EAH posttreatment and 6 months posttreatment, but children in the appetite awareness training showed no change in EAH. Neither treatment produced significant effects on caloric intake in children or on any of the parent outcomes. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that training in food cue responsitivity and appetite awareness has the potential to be efficacious for reducing EAH and binge eating in children. Because these data are preliminary, further treatment development and randomized controlled studies are needed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)

Dick Clark Passes Away at 82

Dick Clark, the long-time television producer and host of American pop culture hit shows such as “American Bandstand”, “Bloopers”, and ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”, passed away this morning from a massive heart attack at age 82 at a Santa Monica hospital.

The entertainment icon, who was once nicknamed “America’s Oldest Teenager”, suffered from Type-2 diabetes and survived a debilitating stroke in 2004, forcing him to hand over the show that year to Regis Philbin. In 2006, Clark announced that host Ryan Seacrest would take over hosting duties for “New Year’s Rockin Eve”, but Clark remained at the stroke of midnight for the last six years to herald in a new year to millions of viewers. His last public appearance was at this year’s “New Year’s Rockin Eve”, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary.

In the 1950′s, Clark – then a disc jockey – started “Bandstand”, a program where teenagers danced on the show to new singles and hits, revolutionizing the way Americans viewed pop music. By the 1960′s and 70′s, he produced and hosted several game shows and music specials, cementing his status and pop culture icon.
He is survived by his wife and three children.

Two Clips From The Avengers

As if you are not already sold on The Avengers movie. The Hollywood Reporter is tracking the movie to open north of $150 million dollars. That is The Dark Knight territory. But here are two more clips from the Avengers movies.
The first clip has Iron Man fighting Thor. I’m guessing this is right after Thor comes to Earth and there is a misunderstanding between the two heroes.

This clip has Nick Fury talking to Loki. It is hard to tell when this clip takes place in the movie. If I had to guess, it is before Loki escapes from S.H.E.I.D headquarters.

The Avengers open May 4th 2012.

Adam Baldwin on ABC’s ‘Castle’, Expect ‘Firefly’ Nods

If you are like me, and I hope you are, I’m a huge fan of the short lived show Firefly.

The cast of Firefly has moved on to other shows and project. But when Nathan Fillion got the lead role to play Castle, he always has hidden Easter Eggs in reference to Firefly. Very subtle refrences like this one:

And some are really in your face:

This week Browncoats are in for a treat. Adam Baldwin guest stars on Monday’s episode of Castle as the “rogue” and “colorful” New York City detective Slaughter, who finds himself babysitting – more or less – the novelist on the latest case.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and Adam Baldwin there “will be a couple” of Easter eggs thrown into the episode for followers of the Firefly universe. “They won’t be too over-the-top, hitting you in the head by a two-by-four,” Baldwin admitted, “but I think people who have seen Firefly will recognize a couple of winks and nods, yes.”

The preview below might have already gave one of them away. Noticed the “brown coat” Castle gave to detective Slaughter?
